ArcelorMittal Rails and Special Sections has dispatched the first shipment of rails for the Oman–United Arab Emirates (UAE) railway project, marking a significant milestone in the development of the region’s first cross-border rail network. This pioneering infrastructure will connect the port in Sohar to the UAE, transforming regional trade and logistics while reinforcing Oman’s ambition to become a leading logistics hub.

The initial shipment, produced at ArcelorMittal’s state-of-the-art facility in Gijón, Spain, was received at the port iin August 2025. It was made up of 3,800 60E2 profile bars in the R260 grade, each measuring 25m in length, with a total weight of 5,700 tonnes. Further deliveries will follow in 2026, bringing the overall supply to 33,100t.

Designed to withstand heavy freight and passenger loads of up to 32.4t per axle, these rails ensure exceptional performance and long-term reliability, tailored to the geographical and environmental conditions of the project.

Pablo Perez, area manager, Rails and Special Sections, said: “We are proud to contribute to a project of such strategic importance for regional connectivity.”

The 238km railway will connect Sohar with the UAE’s national rail network, strengthening commercial exchange and fostering social cohesion between economic and industrial zones in both countries. It will link key urban centres, enable easier travel between communities, and provide seamless, integrated transport solutions.

Hafeet Rail, a joint venture between Oman’s Asyad Group and the UAE’s Etihad Rail, with additional investment from Mubadala Investment Company, was established to develop the landmark railway. Once the line has been completed, Hafeet Rail will also oversee its operations.
