Driving the shift towards cleaner transport
European mobility week is the European Commission’s flagship campaign promoting sustainable urban mobility. It encourages citizens and organisations to embrace cleaner, smarter transport solutions – such as walking, cycling, and public transport.
Among these, rail transport stands out as one of the most environmentally friendly options. It accounts for just 0.4% of the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions, compared to the 25% generated by the overall transport sector. Rail is also the only mode of transport that has consistently reduced its emissions and energy consumption since 1990, while increasingly adopting renewable energy sources.
Steel rails are not only essential for rail infrastructure – they’re also infinitely recyclable. At the end of their service life, rails can be melted down and reused to produce new rails or other steel products. This closed-loop recycling process saves significant energy and natural resources, making steel a cornerstone of circular economy practices.
